Sunset at the Pushkar Camel Fair

Veiled by the smoke rising from a multitude of campfires, a red sunset spreads over the north-eastern fringes of the Great Indian Desert, where thousands of camels are gathered for the annual Pushkar Camel Fair, in Rajasthan, one of India’s best-known festivals.

The largest event of its kind in Asia, the Pushkar Camel Fair draws camel breeders and traders from all over Rajasthan, the so-called ‘desert state of India’, where almost 70% of all the camels in India are found.

Trading starts shortly after dawn, and often continues well into the evening. Here, a group of traders discusses business, whilst a woman cooks on a firepit dug into the sand, and her children settle in for the night.

We photograph the Pushkar Camel Fair on our Pushkar Fair Photography Expedition™, an immersive, fourteen-day, Specialist Photography Workshop in Rajasthan with Dariusz Klemens.
